Developed by fitness expert Bonnie Prudden in 1976, this bodywork method is intended to relax muscle spasms, improve circulation, and alleviate pain. The practitioner, using elbows, knuckles, or fingers, applies pressure for several seconds to "trigger points"-- highly irritable spots on muscle tissue that may radiate pain to other areas. Clients also perform specific exercises for the freed muscles.
